Our team had a chance to talk with Rob to know more about him personally and gain some insights about ALLBIDS, what gets him up in the morning and what makes AllBids so unique. 

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Well, there are not enough hours in a day, so business and pleasure get me going every day. Whilst I've always got an auction project to work on, I am also really passionate about my sports and keeping fit with Rex, the dog. I love learning to surf at the moment in Cronulla – it's become my new golf which I have always been passionate about. But I think about my next surf more than my next game of golf at the moment, and really a surf is the best way to start any day.

Tell us something about yourself many people may not know about you.

I love learning new things and have got the desire to learn about astronomy one day.

Who is someone you find inspirational? And why?

Peter V'landys at the moment. I love his passion for Horse racing and rugby League and his ability to juggle roles, deal with the stresses and go seamlessly from one to another. I find him really inspirational.

What do you love about The Shire?

The lifestyle and the people here make the shire a great place to live and do business.

When you were a child what did you want to grow up to be?

In winter, I wanted to be a Rugby League player, while in summer, I wanted to play cricket for Australia.

Share one of your greatest personal achievements.

The success of ALLBIDS. It provides a stable place of work and the ability for employees to grow and provide for their families. Seeing staff buy their first home and build a family is a great sense of pride.

What brings you great happiness?

Having a fun week of auctions, a surf early Saturday morning, playing good golf before backing a winner, and having a few cold beers...then repeating the cycle.

What is a personal challenge or fear you have successfully overcome?

Public speaking. It's not a natural thing to do, but overcoming the fear was obviously really important for an auctioneer before the auctions all went online.

If you had to choose one food/meal to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

A seafood platter - fresh, healthy, and great taste

What would you tell your younger self?

Just enjoy the ride, and don't worry about things you have no control over.

We are an online auction platform that auctions almost anything.

What was the inspiration to start your business?

The thrill of the auction process, the competition, the variety, the fun and the original online inspiration was of course eBay.

Tell us about a business win or success.

The biggest wins are getting the right team members on board. Once the team and teamwork are right, success flows. Our biggest win was getting the right CIO over 10 years ago to run the platform that has enabled us to grow exponentially.

What is a business obstacle or challenge you have overcome?

The most recent challenge was obviously the pandemic. Staying afloat and staying relevant through a lockdown where we could have two staff onsite was a massive challenge. But, thankfully, we came through by our staff being innovative and flexible and caring about our vendors and our business.

Share one of your favourite reviews/testimonials.

I wanted to take the time to write to you, to express my gratitude and frankly, my relief at signing on to have ALLBIDS manage the clearing and auctioning of our business. From the first phone call I made shortly after we needed to liquidate, ALLBIDS took the time to speak with me about all aspects of the process, and we were on the phone for at least 30 minutes! 

They made sure I knew this wasn’t just a job for him but a service in my time of need. He made sure I was comfortable with everything and didn’t push or try to get my business. From that call and how he spoke with me, I knew I had no other choice. Despite us taking a few months to sign on, plus a few false starts, 

ALLBIDS was always accommodating and gave me the confidence everything would be ok. He stood there and listened to me on the phone with the lawyer while we had someone meddling with the removal of items. He answered every question and kept me in the loop for every decision he made to get the tricky items off the property.

Any exciting developments on the horizon for your business?

Coming to the shire is really exciting for us. We had to expand through the sheer amount of business we are generating and finding a place that combines lifestyle and great people to employ made the decision easy. 

The big development is the launch of Carbids. We see this site as a great way for our car team to focus on an auction place for all motor vehicles. It’s really an exciting time for us right now.

How do you define business success?

Definitely enjoying going to work. If you enjoy what you are doing you will be successful, and thankfully we found a business that's a lot of fun.

Tell us about a book that has impacted the way you work in your business.

There's been a few. I skim through a lot of business books to find motivations appropriate to my business. There is certainly no one book that is a silver bullet. But if I had to pick one, it would be Composure: How Centered Leaders Make the Biggest Impact by Zoe Routh.

If you could open another business, what would that be?

I've always thought opening one of those microbreweries would be fun. Is there one in the Shire yet??

Is there someone in your business you'd love to give a big "thank you" to, and why?

Not one but all the staff – I'm grateful that people want to be part of a family business like ours.

What makes your business unique?

We never wanted to grow too quickly but just do things well.

Tell us about the positive impact your business makes for the Shire community and beyond.

It’s high time that the Shire had a great general auction place for business goods, equipment, household goods, and, of course, cars. It will be great for the Shire community in many ways. 

We have been able to make a huge impact on the community in Canberra, not just our service but also in giving back to the community. ALLBIDS has helped raise over $1 million annually for local charities, communities, and sporting organisations through our online charity auctions.
