From rockabilly to sustainable kids’ adventure wear. How local designer encourages kids to build their own empires.

Inspired by her love of animal print, spots, tartan, patterns and a wealth of red, red and more red; Cookie Empire Kids is on a mission – to help children embrace the diversity of the world, one item of clothing at a time.

We spoke to Sarah Plumer aka Cookie, the label’s Owner and Creative Director about her latest collection to hit the streets.

Originally established as a “women’s rockabilly pinup” clothing line, Cookie had three very successful sell-out seasons. In 2016, however, the company took a different direction by creating functional kids wear that is durable for little adventurers.

“I’m a fashion designer and patternmaker by trade, so when as a mum I couldn’t find many pants that would keep their knees and bottoms padded on hard surfaces, it made sense for me to just make something. My son actually spent his first winter crawling in my baby patch pants.”

As her children grow so does her range. Working out of her Cronulla studio, Cookie designs and makes all the clothing herself and has just created a line of dresses and Matchy Matchy just in time for Christmas!

Not only are her designs practical and fashion-forward, but they are also environmentally considerate. All fabrics have both the Australian climate and the kids who will be wearing them in mind. Sustainably sourced Lycra allows the clothing to be durable, crease-resistant and comfortable, whilst the eco recycled cotton blend helps kids to stay cool.

“Each season, we design the prints on regenerated fabrics. Our clothing patterns are proudly made in Australia and sewn locally. I am a firm believer in longevity in our clothing, not fast fashion; and would rather upcycle a piece of clothing than contribute to landfill.” Cookie states.

Cookie plans to use her clothing as an opportunity to give the next generation the chance to escape and be free, explore life and what it has to offer.

“We want little ones to find out who they are by encouraging them to explore their world,” she says. “Our clothing will complement their movement and needs in the Australian climate and beyond.
