Cronulla Theatre - A Brief History

The Cronulla Theatre was opened on 5th October 1928, with a seating capacity for 1,532. Around 1950, it was taken over by the Greater Union Theatres chain and re-named Odeon.

In recent years, it has been operated by an independent operator.

The roof has been raised and now there are 6-screens in the building. The main entrance has been moved around the corner from Cronulla Street onto the Kingsway and it was re-named GU Filmhouse in 2016.

In November 2019 it was taken over by Hoyts. It was closed on 2nd February 2020 for a $6million refurbishment to be carried out and reopened in July 2020.

Looking to take your next trip to the movies up a notch?

Of course, you are!

The newly refurbished Cronulla Cinema now plays host to a swanky saloon style bar, lounge area and cafe, gourmet pizzas and cheese platters and a next level "Treat City" for all your classic movie snacks.

But that's not all. This particular Hoyts cinema has some exclusive "Cronulla Only" features not found in any other Hoyts location.

First off, you get extra-comfy recliners to kick back on for the same price as a standard movie ticket (mind-blowing, right?) But honestly, these seats are SERIOUSLY comfortable and are usually reserved for Hoyts cinemas offering LUX viewings.

Us Shire folk are getting the royal treatment obviously.

Now secondly, Hoyts have you covered for your next birthday party or corporate event.
Welcome to HOYTS Lounges! Escape into two stylish auditoriums complete with plush lounges and moveable footrests – exclusively to HOYTS Cronulla!

And yes, you can hire out the WHOLE lounge auditorium for you and 20+ mates or work colleagues complete with beers, wine and gourmet pizzas.
